1What it is
If you married outside Brazil, the marriage has to be transcribed at a Brazilian civil registry to appear there. Until then, your Brazilian documents still say “single”, which makes it hard to update your passport, CPF, inheritance or property regime, or to get a Brazilian marriage certificate.
We also help people who live abroad and want to marry at a Brazilian registry: we prepare the paperwork, choose the registry and check whether the ceremony can be held by video call.
2Who can apply
- Brazilians married abroad, to a Brazilian or a foreign spouse
- Couples registered at a Brazilian consulate who have not transcribed the marriage yet
- Couples where at least one partner is Brazilian and want to marry at a registry in Brazil
- Anyone who needs a Brazilian marriage certificate to update documents or property
3Documents you need
- Foreign marriage certificate with apostille or legalisation, or the Brazilian consular registration certificate
- Sworn translation in Brazil, when the certificate is not in Portuguese
- Birth certificate of the Brazilian spouse (or a previous marriage certificate annotated with the divorce)
- ID document of both spouses
- Proof or statement of address in Brazil, if any
4How it works
- 1Certificate review
We check where and how the marriage took place and identify the competent registry.
- 2Apostille and translation
When needed, we guide the apostille in the country of marriage and arrange the sworn translation.
- 3Application to the registry
We put together the transcription request with every document and send it to the registry.
- 4Registration and certificate
We follow it through to registration and deliver the Brazilian marriage certificate.
5Timeframe · How much it costs
It depends on the country that issued the certificate and on the registry. We give you an estimate after reviewing the documents.
You get our quote before any work starts. Official fees, registry charges and translations, when needed, are charged separately according to each office’s tables.
The 1st Civil Registry Office of your city of residence in Brazil. If you have no address in Brazil, the transcription is done at the 1st Office of the Federal District.
Consular registration does not replace transcription: to be valid in the Brazilian civil registry, the marriage must be transcribed at a registry in Brazil.
6Questions about this service
We married at the Brazilian consulate. Do we need a translation?
No. The consular certificate is already Brazilian and in Portuguese. It still has to be transcribed at the registry to take effect in Brazil.
Do I need to travel to Brazil?
No. The request is made with documents sent to the registry, directly or through a representative. We handle everything remotely.
I married a foreigner. Does that change anything?
Transcription works the same way. The foreign spouse’s documents and the property regime are checked in the first review.
I live abroad and want to marry in Brazil. Is it possible?
Yes. We prepare the paperwork and choose the registry. Some registries hold the ceremony by video call; we confirm the conditions first.
